Guidelines for Parents during Pediatric Dental Visits
Creating a Child-Friendly Dental Experience
Going to the dentist can be a different experience for each child. At Parkside Dental, we recognize that each child is unique and are willing to adjust for individual needs. However, we ask that parents respect any requests the staff make about their presence. Here are some guidelines to help your child have a successful visit:
- Avoid Scary Words: Please refrain from using words like “shot,” “drill,” and “pain” to help prevent unnecessary dental anxiety.
No Observers Policy
Research shows that children over the age of 3 often respond better to dental treatment without their parents present, as it creates a less distracting environment and helps the child focus on building a relationship with the dentist.
- First Visits or High Anxiety: If it’s their first visit or they are especially nervous, it might be beneficial to have the parent present in rare situations. However, allowing the child to go on their own helps them to be more confident and independent.
Parent Behavior
- Silent Observer: If approved to accompany your child, we ask that you act as a silent observer unless prompted. This helps your child build trust with the dentist and limits distractions.
- Positive Behavior: Express positive behavior and emotions. Children reflect the behavior they see. If you are calm and positive, your child is more likely to have a positive experience.
Managing Your Own Dental Anxiety
- Meet the Providers: If you trust the dental team, so will your child.
- Prepare Yourself: Practice deep breathing, meditation, mindfulness, or other relaxation techniques before the visit. You want to be in the best possible mental space for your child.
- Alternative Caregiver: If necessary, have another caregiver bring your child to the dentist.
Pediatric Specialty Referrals
While we are happy to provide the care your child needs at Parkside Dental, there are benefits to having more advanced treatments performed at a pediatric specialty clinic:
- Sedation: Specialized clinics often offer sedation to create a more relaxed visit.
- Speed: Specialty clinics have the skills and instruments to provide high-quality treatment in a shorter period of time, which is beneficial for restless children.
- Separation of Dental Home from Procedures: If your child has a difficult experience during treatment, it’s better for them to associate that experience with a location other than Parkside Dental. This helps prevent reluctance and anxiety during future preventive cleanings, which are vital for maintaining oral health.
Advanced Pediatric Training
Dr. Alex Broesder has advanced training in pediatric dental care and stays up to date with the most modern approaches to care. This ensures that your child receives the best possible treatment tailored to their needs.
