New Patient Expectations

What to Expect at Your First Visit

A Warm Welcome

From the moment you step into our clinic, you’ll be greeted by our friendly front desk team. We always digitally forward new patient paperwork to you prior to your first visit. However, if you are unable to complete them beforehand, we kindly ask that you arrive at least 15 minutes early so we can assist you in finalizing any necessary paperwork and answering any questions you might have.

Thorough Comprehensive Examination

Dr. Broesder and one of our highly trained hygienists will conduct a detailed examination of your teeth, gums, and oral structures, including:

  • Cavity detection
  • Gum health assessment
  • Oral cancer screening
Advanced Imaging

We utilize state-of-the-art technology during your first visit, including:

  • A 3D intraoral scan
  • Photos and radiographs
  • An Ultra-Low Dose Cone Beam CT scan for detailed 3D views of your teeth and jaw, ensuring precise diagnoses and treatment planning.
Time Well Spent

We dedicate an entire hour to your initial visit to:

  • Perform a thorough diagnosis.
  • Craft a tailored treatment plan that best suits your unique needs.
Health History Review

We’ll discuss your medical and dental history to ensure we’re aware of any conditions that could impact your care.

Treatment Planning

If additional treatments are needed, we will review:

  • The proposed timeline and benefits.
  • Financial options and insurance details.
  • Any pre-treatment preparations.

-No Dental Cleanings At First Visit-

Dental cleanings are not performed during your first appointment. This is because we prioritize diagnosing the type of cleaning most appropriate for your needs. Cleanings vary in complexity, and this approach ensures your treatment is both tailored and effective.

FAQs: New Patient Expectations

Why do I need an exam before a cleaning?

At Parkside Dental, we prioritize understanding your unique oral health needs before providing treatment. Think of it like meeting someone new
— you wouldn’t trust a stranger to make the best decisions for you. Similarly, we need to get to know your oral health through a thorough examination.

This ensures we provide the safest, most effective care tailored specifically to you. Without this step, we cannot ethically or responsibly begin treatment.

The term “regular cleaning” refers to a preventative procedure called a dental prophylaxis. It’s designed for maintaining healthy gums and teeth. If you have active gingivitis or gum disease, the condition a “regular” cleaning is meant to prevent is already present. In these cases, a different approach, such as periodontal therapy, is required to address the underlying issues effectively.

X-rays provide your dentist with a complete view of your oral health, revealing problems that can’t be seen with the naked eye, like cavities between teeth, bone loss, or infections. Without X-rays, performing a comprehensive exam would be like putting a blindfold on your dentist — it’s impossible to fully assess your dental health. These images are essential for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning, ensuring you receive the best care possible.

Routine check-ups allow us to catch potential issues early, often before they become painful or expensive to treat. Even if you don’t feel like there’s a problem, regular visits help maintain your oral health and prevent future problems.

Fluoride and sealants are preventative measures that help protect your teeth from future decay. Even if you have never had a cavity, these treatments can strengthen your teeth and provide long-term protection. These are especially beneficial to those who have had past dental restorations placed.
